Change, as they say, is the only constant in life. It sweeps us off our feet, challenges our routines, and sometimes takes away what we hold most dear. For me, an artist deeply connected to my practice, my sanctuary has always been my studio—a space where creativity blooms.
A few years ago my husband and I had a dream to buy some land and move our young family to the Sunshine Coast on Australia’s East Coast. We had traveled here many times and fell in love with the area. So we set our hearts to achieving this dream. It is a stunning location with world renowned beaches and rainforests all within 15 minutes, a warm holistic community we want to raise our children in, plus a surplus of creative and business opportunities we had to be a part of. Last month we achieved this dream and now own land for our children to build their own dreams upon. We feel so blessed.
As expected, this recent move however has temporarily separated me from my haven. Although our new home is a haven within itself, I still miss a dedicated space to create.
Moving to a new home is both exciting and daunting, especially for someone deeply connected to their art like myself. The absence of my studio space presented an emotional challenge. I can't create unless there is order in my home, and for those who have moved houses, you would understand the process of navigating through organised chaos is not easy. I also found it difficult to accept the lost momentum I had with my painting practice and art business as I had to prioritise other tasks.
Yet, amidst the longing, I discovered a silver lining. The imperfections of this makeshift studio has become the source of inspiration, reminding me that beauty can be found in unexpected places.
The verandah, for the time being, has now become my new art studio and although it is surrounded by the chaos of family life, I am also gifted the sound of raindrops on the roof, the rustle of leaves in the wind, and the abundant presence of native wildlife – subtle nuances which have become my muse.
The chaos of change has taught me to cherish what I have: a healthy family foremost, followed by my passions and creative ability.
As an artist the absence of my studio amplified its importance in my life. It made me realize that my studio is not merely a physical space; it is a sanctuary where dreams are woven into art, where colors come alive, and where my soul finds peace.
The longing for it became a testament to its significance, a reminder to be grateful for the privilege of having a space that truly feels like home. I have the ability to turn longing into art, to find inspiration in the void, and to create beauty even in the midst of chaos. So, as I embrace this journey, I cherish what I love most and let my creativity flow, no matter where life takes me.
