Embers depicts three Swamp Banksias (Banksia robur) amongst the Wallum heathlands of Queensland's Sunshine Coast, imagined in the final moments of daylight. Although my original reference was captured in the bright light of day, I wanted to explore how the landscape might feel as the sun disappeared, with the last warmth of the afternoon catching the banksias against the deepening shadows.

Working in oils, I allowed intuition to guide my interpretation of the light and colour, drawing on my understanding of tone and chroma to create that lingering glow. I love how even the wildest of the Wallum wildflowers seem to soften in the last light, holding onto the day's final warmth.
