The Details

As Above, So Below began on a wildflower walk up Emu Mountain, within Noosa National Park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. I was drawn to the tangled growth of the Dwarf Banksia (Banksia oblongifolia) and Wallum Tea Tree, where branches and foliage overlapped until it was difficult to tell where one plant ended and another began.

Back in the studio, I worked in oils, building the painting through layers of warm underpainting and expressive mark-making, resisting the urge to simplify or tidy what I saw. Loose, unresolved passages sit alongside more carefully observed details, reflecting the irregular way these plants grow amongst one another. I've always been drawn to this wildness within the Australian Wallum heathlands, and wanted to capture the beauty of this natural disorder, allowing the landscape to remain tangled and true to what first caught my attention.
